Imagine my surprise when I discovered a message from the U.S. Census Bureau in my Chinese takeout fortune cookies! As you can see in the photo above, one side of the "fortune" delivered a traditional silly message ("You will have a happy adventure soon."). The surprise came on the other side, where we were encouraged to participate in the U.S. census: "We the people ... count!" Seriously?! I'm relatively sure the fortune cookie producers of the world have not stepped forward voluntarily to offer their support to the census "cause." That leaves only one possibility: the federal government has invested tax dollars in fortune cookie messages in an effort to promote participation in the census. What's next? Hmmm. Keep your eyes peeled for census messages falling from pinatas; dropping out of Cracker Jacks boxes; appearing on the side of Starbucks coffee cups... Can you think of other possibilities?
