Eagle on rock

I'm not sure why, but this photo of an eagle on a large rock in Fidalgo Bay is one of my favorites. This shot dates back to the golden days of film, and I think I used a 135 mm fixed lens. This rock, located near the Tesoro refinery wharf, "comes and goes" with the tide.

Up and away

This brief video clip represents an experiment on my part following a recent adventure on the shoreline of Fidalgo Bay. Noise in the background is traffic on nearby Highway 20. Next step is to successfully eliminate unwanted tree frames at tail end of video. Fun to learn on the fly (no pun intended).

Island predators

I saw a number of bald eagles and hawks on my trip last weekend to Samish Island, but Fidalgo Island boasts its own population of predators. On Tuesday I spent about 45 minutes on March's Point, much of that time looking for eagles. I was told by a bicyclist passing by that there have been more than a dozen eagles hanging around trees such as this one on the shoreline. This immature eagle took the place of a mature, white-capped eagle as I moved from one position to another in an effort to put my back to the sun. I capped off my bird-watching day in the evening on North Whidbey, where I saw a large osprey in a tree overlooking a pond. No camera, and probably not enough light if I had it.

Welcome to the new blog for AnacortesToday, a photographic journal of life in Anacortes, Washington. My name is Steve Berentson. I’m a fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. I created my web site almost six years ago, choosing to feature images but few words. Recently the desire to share ideas has inspired me to create a "place" to post words - in some cases, many words. I look forward to exploring this new means of sharing with others, local and distant.
